A Japanese green tea blend with natural sweetness

The Genmaicha Glory from GROSCHE is a deliciously unique Genmaicha tea. It's a special blend of Japanese Sencha green tea and fire-toasted rice. There is a natural sweetness and almost chewy character to this tea due to the blend of the green tea and rice. During the firing of the rice, it is not uncommon for rice to ‘pop’, hence the pet name ‘popcorn-tea’. We would describe the flavour as warm and nutty.

What is Genmaicha tea?

Genmaicha tea originated several centuries ago when Buddhist monks mixed green tea with the browned rice stuck to the bottom of their rice cauldrons. It was considered a gesture of humility and conservation. Soon after, tea vendors throughout Japan began blending Sencha and Bancha-style green teas with roasted rice, creating a widely popular green tea that is perfect at breakfast time or as a daily drinking green tea for additional substance.

What is Sencha loose-leaf tea?

Sencha is produced by steaming fresh green leafs. The leafs are then rubbed either by machine or by hand for the needle-like tea leaf structure. The rubbed leaf is then pan fried or basket fired which gives it its distinctive glossy, almost waxy, appearance.

How to make Genmaicha tea?

Like most green teas, this Genmaicha tea is delicate and requires proper steeping for the best results. To avoid bitter or astringent tastes, be conscious of your water temperature and steeping time. Because of the needle-like leaf structure we recommend teapots or cups with stainless steel infusers such as the JOLIETTE. When using a teapot with a glass infuser, the tea leaves could get stuck.

Hot tea

  • 1 heaping teaspoon of tea | 12 oz. / 350 ml of water
  • steep for 3-4 minutes | water temperature: 75° C/ 170° F
