Our Story

After dealing with serious waterborne illness first hand, we decided to dedicate our lives to giving safe water to those in need.

We founded GROSCHE in our basement in 2006 with visions of a social enterprise that could change the world. We use the profits from the sales of our products to fund the GROSCHE SAFE WATER PROJECT, installing water filters to provide those in economically underdeveloped regions with access to safe water.

How We Give Back

When you buy a GROSCHE product, you’re funding 50+ days of safe drinking water for someone in need via the GROSCHE Safe Water Project.

Our Safe Water Project (SWP) provides people in need with safe drinking water through the construction and installation of Biosand water filters. These filters purify water for a family up to 10 and can last up to 30 years.

Thanks to customers like you, we’re in business to change lives.

What we do

With the proceeds from your purchases, we fund the making, installation, and care of biosand water filters in remote extreme poverty stricken areas. These biosand filters make their contaminated water safe to drink. Allowing them to work, go to school, and lead healthier and productive lives. These biosand filters last up to 30 years - saving and changing lives in the process without any extra chemicals, cartridges, electricity, or moving parts, and requiring little to no maintenance.

Giving back

When you choose GROSCHE, you're choosing to give back safe water to those in need.

This is a short video overview of the GROSCHE Safe Water Project.

Sustainable Development

Our approach to giving back is one of empowering sustainable development. The filters that we fund are locally made and serviced, with local materials, by local people. They install the filters we fund, as well as sell filters to those who can buy. This empowers our teams to build skills, have a source of income, and gain sustainable employment that benefits those in need.

How Biosand Filters work

Made with local skills and materials, these water filters purify contaminated water without the use of chemicals, electricity, or any replacement cartridges. They are made of cement or clay, and only use gravel and sand to biologically purify water so its safe to drink.

They last up to 30 years, and purify water for a family of up to 10 people. They can change the course of 2 generations of people's live allowing them to work, go to school, and improve their lives.

Where are our projects located?

Biosand filters work in warm and temperate climates. Our Safe Water Projects and water filters are located in remote mainly agricultural areas (with no access to electricity) in South Sudan, Uganda, Malawi, India, Pakistan, and The Phillippines.

Beyond our mission - The GROSCHE Safe Water Project, we keep trying to do our part to make the world a better place.

GROSCHE Banana Plantation

In 2016 we funded a social enterprise banana plantation in South Sudan. The goal was to build skills and knowledge to promote independence, food and income security. This is a short story of the impact it had on the people there.

Latrines and Sanitation

In addition to installing Biosand water filters for safe water access, we are also installing latrines to provide sanitation access.

The latrines are built in the middle of a block of a few homes, allowing people to share their use and upkeep.

A dire need, especially for women

Women in these communities usually avoid going to the fields in the day due to safety risks of being undressed in the outdoors. Groups of women from a community usually go out in the middle of the night for safety. These community latrines allow them to access sanitation within the compounds of their homes or neighborhoods safely.

Safety for children and families

Open defecation is a leading cause the spread of infections from E.coli and other bacteria. By having secure latrines with access to water for sanitation, this risk of illness is controlled, leading to improved community health.

A simple solution that changes lives

These latrines have a big impact on the health of the community, and on safety and hygiene. Since there is access to safe water from GROSCHE filters nearby, handwashing is also possible after using the facilities.

Community involvement

The approach we take to building the latrines is to find all the materials for them, and involve the community who will be using them to partake in building them. That gives them the pride of ownership of these facilities, as well as an understanding of how they work and how to take care of them. As a result our latrines have near 100% utilization and a direct impact on community well being.
