English Breakfast Tea

It was Anna, wife of the seventh Duke of Bedford, who is credited with the creation of afternoon tea. The custom at that time in England granted only two meals per day: a large breakfast and a dinner late in the evening. Anna began instructing her servants to prepare tea and cakes in the afternoon in order to reduce the empty feeling caused by hunger. This began a fashionable custom in Britain which has endured until today. The tea widely used to enjoy this daily routine is black Ceylon tea, otherwise known as Orange Pekoe or English Breakfast tea. The British soon began to realize that consuming this tea was not only enjoyable but consisted of many healthful benefits. Today we know it as such, and as a luxury black tea full of flavour and body which mingled with milk creates a beautiful copper cup.

How to Make English Breakfast Tea

To make this tea the traditional way, add one teaspoon of loose leaf tea or every 12 oz. (350 ml) of water. Pour freshly boiled water into tea mug or teapot and let it brew for 2-4 minutes. Once the tea has steeped, remove the tea. Pour in a little milk and sweeten with sugar or honey as required. Sip and enjoy!

To make this tea cold, add one teaspoon of loose leaf tea for every 9 oz (263 ml) of water. Pour freshly boiled water into tea mug or teapot and let it brew for 2-4 minutes. Once the tea has steeped, pour over ice and add any sweeteners or dairy you desire.

Steep concentrated, add honey, ice, and lemon wedges for a pleasant afternoon sweet tea.
