Tea, Earl Grey, Hot!

Star trek fans know that Captain Jean -Luc Picard was a huge fan of Earl Grey Tea. He was often heard in this popular TV show ordering a “tea, Earl Grey, hot” from his food replicator.  What is his favorite type of tea, is also one of our best sellers. Earl Grey Tea Benefits

Not only is Earl Grey tea a nice treat to the palate, but it also offers health benefits to tea drinkers. Earl Grey tea is good for your teeth as it naturally has fluoride in it. Fluoride works to protect your teeth from cavities and fights against decay. This tea also aids in the digestion process, relieving painful indigestion, colic and nausea. Studies indicate the polyphenols found in black tea can be effective in preventing many cancers such as stomach, prostate, breast, ovarian, and bladder cancers. Polyphenols also help to block damage associated with toxic chemicals or tobacco consumption. If that’s not enough, this tea is effective for weight loss, stress relief, cold relief, as well as staying hydrated.

How to Steep it

To steep it hot, use one teaspoon of loose leaf tea for every 12 oz. (350 ml) of water. Let it steep for 2-3 minutes in 100 degrees C (212 F) water. Once steeping has completed, remove the loose leaf tea and enjoy.  The oil of bergamot in this tea will steep to a lovely fresh flavor.

To enjoy this tea cold, use one teaspoon of loose leaf tea for every 9 oz. (263 ml) of water. Let it steep for 2-3 minutes in 100 degrees C (212 F) water. Once steeping has completed, remove the loose leaf tea and enjoy.

A London Fog Latte is one of the most popular drinks that is made with Earl Grey black tea.  To create a classic London Fog Latte, steep tea with half the amount of normal water, add frothed milk and voila! You can add a few dashes of vanilla syrup too, if you like.

Some cakes and baking recipes call for Earl grey teas as a natural flavoring. That would include different tyoes of baked goods like  chocolates, and even some savoury sauces. For making the sauces, the flavour is normally created by adding tea bags to the basic stock, boiling a few minutes and then discarding the bags. Loose leaf tea is often added to melted butter or hot cream and strained after the flavour is infused for making sweet recipes.

The history of Earl grey tea

Black tea with the oil of bergamot has been enjoyed in England since at least the 1820’s and 1830’s. The Earl Grey blend of black tea has been said to be named after Charles Grey. He was the 2nd Earl Grey, and was the British Prime Minister in the 1830’s. High society influenced popular culture in those days, much like today.  That is why Earl Grey tea became so famous. Among the notable achievements of the famous Earl’s government was the abolition of slavery in the British Empire.  Earl Grey with bergamot is was his favorite type of tea. China black tea has always been the base for good Earl Grey blends. It has bergamot oil added to it for that distinct freshness an crisp flavor that is distinct in an Earl grey Black tea.

What is bergamot oil?

Bergamot orange (Citrus bergamia) is a small citrus tree. It blossoms during the winter months. It grows in Calabria, Italy among other places. This citrus fruit gives us Bergamot oil. The additional of the oil of bergamot to a quality base black tea makes a quality Earl Grey tea.
