You’ve most likely had a warming cup of ginger tea while trying to fight a cold. Or maybe you’ve drunk it to ease your nausea after a long road trip. But did you know that drinking ginger tea every day could actually help you live longer? So, what is ginger tea good for? From fighting a cold to treating cancer, ginger tea benefits can greatly improve your health.
Ginger was first discovered 5,000 years ago in southern parts of ancient China. Ginger is a warming spice that comes from the same family as cardamom and turmeric. It was originally used as a natural medicine to treat common illnesses like stomach pains and nausea. During the spice trade, it was heavily traded and quickly spread to India, the Middle East, and Europe by the 1st century AD. For thousands of years, ginger was a treasured good used as a treatment for many illnesses. However, it is just recently that we have discovered the true health benefits of ginger tea.

What is Ginger Tea Good for?
The ginger tea benefits are plentiful. Here are 9 reasons why ginger tea is good for you and why you should drink it:
- Relieves Nausea
Since its discovery, ginger has been used to treat nausea, motion sickness, and morning sickness. Drinking a cup of ginger tea before travelling can help prevent the feeling of being nauseous and vomiting. It has also been shown to help relieve morning sickness in pregnant women. However, you should speak with your doctor first about drinking ginger tea during pregnancy.
- Reduces Inflammation
Thanks to 6-gingerol (the main component of ginger), ginger is one of the best herbs to treat inflammation. This makes the tea an ideal treatment for joint and muscle pain. Daily consumption of ginger tea can reduce pain, swelling, and tiredness in joints. This can greatly help those that suffer from rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
Winter Ginger Turmeric
A potent blend of organic spices including turmeric, ginger, and cinnamon to impart powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and pro-digestive qualities to the drinker; as well as a comforting warming effect.
- Supports Proper Digestion
Ginger helps with proper digestion and prevents stomach pains and heartburn. Studies have shown that ginger speeds up the emptying of the stomach, preventing indigestion.
- Improves Blood Circulation
Ginger tea contains many vitamins and minerals that help improve blood circulation in the body. Regular consumption may prevent blood clots and reduce the risk of heart disease. It may help prevent fevers and reduce sweating. Ginger can also lower blood pressure as it is a great blood thinner.
- Menstrual Discomfort
While some women use medications for treating menstrual cramps and pain, an alternative that works just as well is ginger tea. You can either drink ginger tea to ease the pain or soak a towel in ginger tea and apply to the area in pain. This will soothe and relax the stressed muscles.
- Immunity
Many berries are known for their wealth of antioxidants, but ginger actually has more. Therefore, by drinking a cup of ginger tea each day, it can lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of stroke or heart disease. More antioxidants can also reduce the chances of getting common illnesses like colds and infections.

- Weight Loss
Through some of the previously mentioned health benefits of ginger tea, drinking tea can help with weight loss. Drinking a cup each morning can help with fat burning throughout the day. This is because ginger increases the breakdown of fats and prevents fat absorption. If you’re not a fan of the treadmill, have a cup of ginger tea instead!
- Enhances Brain Function
Due to ginger’s antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, drinking ginger tea can prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease. The exact cure of Alzheimer's is still unknown. However, what we do know is ginger can prevent it by slowing the rate at which brain cells die off.
- Helps Prevent and Treat Cancer
Believe it or not, ginger is quite effective at preventing and treating cancer growth. Studies show that the 6-gingerol found in ginger can block cancer cell growth and development for ovarian and prostate cancer. Though further research is still needed, some tests have shown that ginger is more consistent at preventing cancer cell growth than chemotherapy.
Add Some Flavour with Lemon Ginger Tea
Technically, lemon ginger tea isn’t an actual tea as it does not use any leaves. Rather it’s an infusion of lemon juice and ginger. However, this does not make it any less helpful for your health. While sharing many benefits with regular ginger tea, the lemon creates a sweeter drink with a few more added benefits.
The added lemon provides a bunch of vitamins and minerals such as vitamins C, B6, A, and E, calcium, iron, zinc, and many more. It provides an addition of antioxidants as well which are useful for fighting disease and preventing high blood pressure. Lemon ginger tea also improves the skin, hair, and teeth thanks to the Vitamins A and C. We also have a Thai Lemon Ginger blend that has the added benefits of rooibos tea.

After reading all the benefits that this tea has to offer, we know you’re curious about how to make a cup for yourself. Here’s a simple recipe using fresh ginger that you can make today:
- 2 inches of fresh raw ginger (you can use more or less to change the strength)
- 1 - 2 cups of water
- 1 - 2 tablespoons of honey/brown sugar
- Lemon (optional to add flavour)
- Firstly, clean and peel about 2 inches of fresh ginger root. Then slice this piece into as many thin slices as you can to increase the flavour.
- Then, boil the ginger in 1 to 2 cups of water for 10-20 minutes; the longer it boils, the stronger the flavour will be. Once done simmering, remove the tea from heat and discard the ginger slices.
- For flavour, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of honey or brown sugar to add a bit of sweetness to the tea. You may also add a wedge or two of lemon to make a lemon ginger tea with the added health benefits.
