Product Description

Enjoy a slow brew coffee with this pour over coffee maker

The AUSTIN from GROSCHE is a premium pour over coffee maker. It’s unique in its design with its ultra-fine stainless steel filter, handmade borosilicate glass beaker, and neoprene sleeve. The stainless steel filter will not rust or trap natural coffee oils, leaving you with the finest, tastiest coffee. The AUSTIN is easy to use and provides full control over the brewing process of your pour over coffee. It has a capacity of 6 cups / 600 ml and makes two large cups of coffee, perfect for serving two people.

Laser-cut stainless steel micro-filter

No more paper filters! Paper filters trap the essential oils that are extracted from your coffee grounds and change the taste of your coffee. With the AUSTIN drip coffee maker, you can get all of the flavour and taste from your coffee, maximising it to its full potential.

Premium quality glass

The AUSTIN is a premium pour over coffee maker that features a heatproof borosilicate glass carafe. Serve your freshly brewed drip coffee straight from the carafe thanks to the protective neoprene sleeve. The glass carafe is dishwasher-proof but we recommended hand-washing to keep the AUSTIN as beautiful as it is.

Pour over coffee method

Simply add your coarse ground coffee to the stainless steel filter. Then slowly pour over a bit of hot water to allow the coffee to bloom and unfold it’s aroma. Make sure to let the water sit for 1 minute after it has come to a boil to make sure you don’t burn your coffee and end up with a bitter flavour. Continue to pour the water slowly in circular motions until the carafe of the AUSTIN is full.

GROSCHE Safe Water Project

With your purchase of this product, GROSCHE is able to provide 50+ days of safe drinking water to someone in need. GROSCHE is a Social Enterprise and certified B Corp, which is the highest certification for businesses that share a mission to do good for the world.

works great and arrived fastPerhaps the best permanent filter system I have ever used. Using a regular grind coffee, I have almost no residue at the bottome of the pot. A handsome, contemporary design. Would live to have a small warming tray for it though.. Liked it so much. Highly recommended

Wonderful coffeeIt's pretty enough to live on the counter, it's easy to clean. The filter is quite sturdy and it makes 2 large mugs of tasty coffee.
The sleeve portion takes awhile to air dry though.

Fragile glassGlass is far too fragile. I bought two of these and both broke far too easily.

A Fine Replacement for a ChemexI wanted to write a review b/c it's so difficult to compare all of these different pour over things. To be clear I think my ideal setup would have been an 8 cup Chemex with an Able Kone permanent filter. But given the cost of both of those, the filter most of all, I decided to try out some other options. The Canadian company Grosche and this product caught my eye. I wanted something to brew more than one cup in, and avoid all the plastic in my standard drip, so having both a permanent steel filter and glass carafe in the same package seemed ideal. I also hate the idea of consumables (you always run out, and its an ongoing cost) and I honestly enjoy the oils in coffee (my back-up is a french press).

First off let me tell you that right out of the gate this performed well, if slow. I manually grind my beans each morning and I've experimented with literally every level of coarseness without the ability to speed up the brew time. It can take upwards of 10+ minutes to brew a couple standard coffee mugs, (whatever technical "cups" that is). I think the fault is to blame with the poor design of the filter, it has perforations one one side and not the other, and once the grounds settle into the bottom section the filtering process really drags. That said, it does work, and the coffee tastes great once brewed. I read some issues regarding the slow process and keeping the coffee hot. If you're brewing with the proper temp water (about a minute off boil) your coffee should still be plenty hot after 10 minutes of brewing in this thing. That said I actually cherish the taste of coffee and drink it black no-sugar, so maybe that helps.

My biggest issue however is that the filter collar delaminated in under 10 days. The filter is made of a top collar, middle, and bottom cap. The top collar has delaminated from the rest and will soon be useless.

On to the positive notes. Before my filter broke I contacted Grosche about strategies of improving my brew time/technique. To my surprise they offered to send me a new filter, which I appreciated but at the time didn't need (I now do so I'm extra appreciative).

I'll update my review based on the success/reliability of the new filter. If it holds up I'd be happy to upgrade my review to a 4 star based on great customer service if nothing else. If the new filter holds up, even given it's foibles, it's a terrific value at it's price point.

    Pros:
' No plastic anywhere. That was a key factor in my purchase decision over other products.
    ' It functions well/as advertised.
' Coffee stays hot if brewed at correct temp. (about a minute off boil).
' Neoprene sleeve protects from heat well.
    ' Easy to clean
    ' Outstanding customer service.
' Canadian company, felt good about supporting local-ish.
' Contributes to clean water, nice feel good.

    Cons
' Slow, and I mean, SLOW.
    ' Oddly designed filter
    ' Filter build quality
    ' Glass is quite thin.
' Neoprene sleeve isn't removable, I fear at some point this will become "grimy".

UPDATE: After reviewing my email they went more than out their way to make me happy including shipping me a new filter including a handwritten note and bag coffee. I am beyond impressed with their customer service. This deserves an extra star for sure!
